After struggling with my weight since childhood, in 2001 I underwent laparoscopic Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass surgery and successfully lost 160 pounds. It was my honor to begin working with bariatric patients in 2004 when I had the opportunity to build a bariatric surgery program from the ground up. In 2006 I became one of the first Certified Bariatric Nurses (CBN) in the country.
I have provided all levels of care to the bariatric surgery patient including direct bedside care, pre- and post-operative clinic visits, and patient and family education (informational seminars and preoperative classes). I have over eight years experience moderating both live and online support groups. I have undergone two successful ASMBS BSCOE site inspections. My expertise includes physician and employer outreach strategies as well as creation and management of bariatric social media including Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Pinterest.
As valuable to me as my direct work experience are the rich volunteer opportunities I’ve been blessed to serve. After serving first on the Advisory Board and then on the Board of Directors for the past six years, in January of 2012, it was my honor to become the Chairman of the Obesity Action Coalition. Additionally, I serve on the Board of Directors for the Tennessee Chapter of the ASMBS, on the Tennessee Obesity Taskforce and as Chair of the ASMBS Integrated Health Clinical Issues and Guidelines Committee.
Having worked with thousands of bariatric patients and through my personal experience as a gastric bypass patient, I understand the unique perspective of our patients.
